Neuromuscular training for the endurance athlete

Human Motion Founder Carmen Bott, Strength and Conditioning Specialist, MSc (c) writes. kris-stunt-small.jpgStrength training for the endurance athlete should focus on addressing the neuromuscular system. This system refers to the communication highway between the brain or spinal cord and the muscles responsible for producing and controlling movement. This is a different adaptation from hypertrophy training, where athletes may lift weights to gain mass and maximum strength. Adaptation at the neuromuscular level involves improving communication between the brain and the muscles. This type of training does not lead to an increase muscle fiber size, which can be detrimental to any endurance athlete’s performance. Instead, it is about finely tuning the muscular and the body’s kinematics, so athletes can move injury free and continue to participate in the activities they love for many years to come.

The shoes under the microscope this month are the Excel 3000 from NOMIS; a road running shoe suitable for high mileage bitumen pounding. Sadly, not enough people are aware of NOMIS in the endurance world; their main claim to fame is producing world-class football, hockey and court footwear and gloves. Having purchased and now used the Excel 3000 I can testify to the quality of design and performance this rising brand brings to its shoes.
